Goal 1: No poverty

Eradicating poverty is not only a task to end suffering, it’s an act of justice and the key to unlocking human potential within the region.

We support community funds in their pursuit of their local and global goals.

Many of our Resiliency grants supported emergency needs, both during the initial outreach of COVID-19 and the subsequent crises experienced by households as they grappled with furloughs and increasing household costs.

From 1982 to 2018, West Central Initiative provided Workforce Development Grants that assisted employers to train existing employees for higher wage positions. The Minnesota Department of Education and Economic Development‘s offerings took the place of this effort, and thus we shifted our grantmaking to other endeavors.

Through 2016, Community Action Organizations were supported with noncompetitive grants from our Family Economic Success grant program to fund a collaborative effort in financial education and asset building programing, such as free tax preparation services, financial literacy coaching, and Individual Development Accounts.

  • Ask nonprofits in your community how to support their poverty-fighting mission.
  • Donate what you don’t use. Local charities will give your gently used clothes, books, and furniture a new life.
  • Talk to your local school about the ways they support struggling families.
