West Central Initiative

For four decades, we’ve worked alongside the people of White Earth Nation and west central Minnesota to shape a stronger region.

We believe bold ideas grow best when rooted in community and that lasting prosperity depends on connection, collaboration, and care for the places we call home.

As a regional community foundation and economic development district, we invest in people, communities, and systems that make our corner of Minnesota vibrant, inclusive, and sustainable.

Who We Serve

Our corner of Minnesota stretches across rolling prairies, fertile farmland, and countless lakes, a landscape we both steward and benefit from. Century farms stand beside modern operations, growing cities expand outward, and small towns honor their heritage while welcoming newcomers. Most of our 82 cities have fewer than 1,000 residents, with some struggling to retain essentials like schools and grocery stores while others invest in growth through bonds, child-care centers, and new businesses, reflecting both the challenges and opportunities shaping our region’s future.

We seek to embody our values in all that we do.

  • Neighborliness arises out of a strong belief that our interconnectedness is crucial to our long-term viability. Town to town, county to county, organization to organization, and certainly person to person, the fabric of our region depends on cooperation, appreciation, openness, and generosity. 
  • Generosity is a dimension of neighborliness, but it flies higher over the region because it speaks to a willingness to embrace a common good that we only can achieve through collective action, through everyone giving of their time, talent, and treasure.   
  • Empowerment in our current context is directed both internally and externally. We encourage both our staff and our fellow citizens to be a part of bold action in our region and to develop and use power to a good end.
  • Trend-testing is a dimension of that bold action. We learn from one another while we work together to solve problems. We embrace risk and learn from our mistakes, always.
