Local Foods & Sustainable Agriculture

Connecting People, Farms, and Food Systems that Sustain Our Region

A vibrant and sustainable local food system strengthens local farms, encourages the consumption of fresh and nutritious foods, and fosters resilient communities and economies.

To create a thriving and interconnected food ecosystem, we support regenerative agriculture practices, connect farmers with consumers, facilitate educational opportunities, and advocate for policies that support local food production.

West Central Minnesota Regional Food System Plan

In collaboration with PartnerSHIP 4 Health and Clay, Becker, Otter Tail, and Wilkin Counties, we created a regional food plan to increase local food production, expand access to healthy food, and improve education about local food. This five-year plan brings structure and strategy to local food systems growth and helps align policies to support the local food system.

West Central Minnesota Food Policy Council

West Central Initiative is a founding member of the West Central Minnesota Food Policy Council (FPC). Guided in its work by the Regional Food System Plan, the FPC advises on food policies, fosters a sustainable food system, promotes food security, and raises awareness by collaborating with consumers, growers, businesses, and other stakeholders in the local food system.

The Food Policy Council moves its work forward through three subcommittees: Food Security, Urban Agriculture, and Marketing Local Foods. If you would like to learn more about the Food Policy Council or to volunteer on a subcommittee click here or contact Jason Bergstrand at jason.bergstrand@claycountymn.gov.

Farmland Access

We’re a member of the Farmland Access Hub, a consortium of partners including nonprofits, government agencies, local companies, and private citizens dedicated to assisting beginning farmers with their quest for land tenure. We’re working to support and preserve our farmland for future generations.

Good Food Loan Fund

To support new and existing small-scale farmers in our region, we provide lower-interest loans (up to $15,000). We encourage underserved segments of the farming population who do not have the availability of traditional financing to apply.

Lida Farm

Ryan Pesch, owner of Lida Farm, is passionate about bringing the good food and sustainable agriculture movement to our region.

We’ve had the privilege of collaborating with Ryan on many projects, including Local Foods, Local Places in Pelican Rapids, and the Deep Roots Festival. We admire his bold ideas and his even bolder actions.

Ryan is just one of many sustainable producers in our region providing local foods!
