In the heart of Morris, Minnesota, John Amundson’s business, John’s Total Entertainment, has been a community staple for more than 25 years.

Although the store has been open for decades, some Morris residents have started asking how long he’s been in business. It was a recent grant distributed through West Central Initiative from the Main Street Revitalization program, created by the State of Minnesota to address the economic development and redevelopment needs across the state, that truly put John’s Total Entertainment on the map.

The grant enabled significant improvements to the store. The front of the building received a makeover with new doors, windows, and signage. New carpeting was installed on the main floor and in the basement, where the play area was expanded. Electrical work was updated, and the store layout was reworked.

“We’ve absolutely gained business since the remodel,” said John. “Many people who drive down Main Street every day didn’t know about our business before. The increase in customers has been a steady stream. The store now attracts more visitors, many of whom are discovering it for the first time despite living in the area for years.”

From Humble Beginnings to a Community Staple

John’s Total Entertainment began as a small sports card and comic book shop. It has since transformed into a comprehensive entertainment hub, offering everything from trading cards to retro vinyl records.

“I started out as a sports card and comic book store,” said John. “I wanted to carry more products, so I had to evolve and move into a bigger space.” Moving to the City Center Mall in Morris, the store expanded to include magazines, books, and used CDs, eventually rebranding to John’s Total Entertainment.

Since its inception in 1993 and relocation to Main Street in 1998, the store has continually adapted to meet customer demands. The inventory now includes both modern and nostalgic items, catering to a wide range of interests. From vintage vinyl records and old gaming systems, such as the Nintendo Entertainment System and Atari to the latest products, John’s Total Entertainment offers something for everyone.

The Revitalization of John’s Total Entertainment

John was initially hesitant to invest further in his business, despite his success. He felt things were good enough and didn’t want to spend more money. However, the Main Street Revitalization program presented a compelling opportunity. Realizing it was good for both his business and Main Street, John decided to embrace change.

Reflecting on the experience, John appreciates the value of reinvesting in his business. The grant from West Central Initiative showed him the importance of updating the business itself, not just the inventory. This reinvestment has led to noticeable growth in the business.

John’s Total Entertainment’s revitalization is a prime example of how community support can breathe new life into local businesses. John Amundson’s journey demonstrates the power of adaptation, investment, and community in sustaining and growing a beloved local business.
