40 Years of

Investing in your good ideas.

For 40 years, West Central Initiative and the Minnesota Initiative Foundations have been investing in your good ideas—strengthening communities, supporting local leadership, and creating opportunities across Greater Minnesota.

What began with a visionary commitment from the McKnight Foundation has grown into a statewide network rooted in the belief that the people closest to a community understand its greatest strengths and possibilities. Together, the Minnesota Initiative Foundations have helped turn local ideas into lasting impact for families, businesses, schools, and entire communities.

As West Central Initiative celebrates this milestone, we honor four decades of partnership, innovation, and trust in the people of west central Minnesota and White Earth Nation. From economic development and child-care solutions to community philanthropy and clean energy initiatives, the work has always started with local voices and bold ideas. Forty years later, that mission remains the same: investing in your good ideas and building a stronger, more resilient future together.

  • 2026 marks West Central Initiative’s 40th Anniversary.

It’s an opportunity to celebrate four decades of partnership, community leadership, and investment in the future of our region. Thank you for being part of this work. With hope and determination, we look forward to many more years of building a stronger, more resilient region.

How to Navigate It

We use “pins” on the map to show grants and loans. Circular pins represent grants, and diamond-shaped pins represent loans. When multiple grants or loans exist in one location, the pin appears more opaque or white.

Click a pin to open a data box with information about the grants and loans we’ve provided at the location over time. If a location includes multiple grants or loans, use the arrows in the left corner of the data box to move between entries. The right corner shows the total number of grants and/or loans in that area.

To view information for a specific county or White Earth Nation, click somewhere in that geographic area without a pin on the map. The totals include all dollars provided to businesses and organizations located in that area.

To search your area, click the magnifying glass icon in the bottom right corner. Enter your address and the map will zoom in on nearby points.
