West Central Initiative Welcomes 2026 Energy Engineering Interns from Germany
Reading Time:
West Central Initiative welcomes Ahmed “Fares” Obeid and Björn von der Ecken as its 2026 Energy Engineering Interns. In these roles, Fares and Björn will support efforts to advance clean energy initiatives, improve regional energy efficiency, and help identify sustainable solutions that benefit west central Minnesota. Both are studying at the University of Applied Sciences Münster in Germany.
“Fares and Björn bring a strong mix of technical knowledge and systems thinking that really complements our work,” said West Central Initiative Energy and Adaptation Planner Griffin Peck. “Their interest in both the big-picture challenges of sustainability and the practical solutions happening in rural communities makes their contributions especially valuable. We’re excited to learn alongside them as they engage with our region.”

Introducing Ahmed “Fares” Obeid
Fares is pursuing a master’s degree in Sustainable Transformation Design. He was drawn to the field because of its relevance to today’s challenges and its forward-looking, interdisciplinary approach that builds on his background in environmental engineering focused on buildings and energy.
“I wanted to intern at West Central Initiative to work directly with small communities on energy and climate adaptation issues and to learn more about an interdisciplinary, strategic approach to sustainable transformation design,” said Fares. “I’m especially interested in learning how to clearly and concisely communicate complex topics, like the energy transition, and to act as a bridge-builder in these conversations.”
Introducing Björn von der Ecken

Björn is studying Industrial Engineering with a focus on Energy Technologies. He chose this path because of its broad scope, combining business and technical knowledge while addressing global challenges related to energy and sustainability.
“West Central Initiative’s work closely aligns with my studies in renewable energy and energy-efficiency planning,” said Björn. “I’m looking forward to experiencing American culture, improving my language skills, and learning more about the challenges and opportunities communities face here.”
Outside of their work, Fares and Björn are eager to explore Minnesota and experience life in the region. Fares hopes to visit places such as Itasca State Park, Split Rock Lighthouse, and the Twin Cities, while Björn is excited to attend sporting events and spend time outdoors—especially canoeing or fishing on one of Minnesota’s many lakes. Both enjoy staying active, whether through sports, biking or spending time in nature, and are looking forward to connecting with new people during their time in west central Minnesota.
