Nick and Katie Ganoe

Inspiring Generations of Generosity with Nick and Katie Ganoe

December 9, 2024

Reading Time:

3–4 minutes

Nick and Katie Ganoe’s story began in Fergus Falls, where they spent their childhood surrounded by the warmth of community. Life eventually led them away—to college and careers—but Fergus Falls stayed close to their hearts. When the time came to imagine a life for their future family, they found themselves drawn back, knowing that the next chapter of their story belonged in the town that had shaped them.

They couldn’t be happier with their decision to return to Fergus Falls. Nick and Katie now have two young children. Nick now teaches middle school band at Fergus Falls Public School, and Katie is the Executive Director at Otter Cove Children’s Museum in downtown Fergus Falls.

Inspiration and Action

Philanthropy has always been a part of the Ganoes’ lives. However, two pivotal experiences significantly shaped their perspective on generosity and inspired them to broaden their vision of investing in the region–raising their children and building careers dedicated to supporting kids and families.

Nick and Katie have always recognized and appreciated the values nonprofits bring to a community—caring for others and actively contributing to their community. When their children were born, they felt a deep desire to pass on those values. For them, involving their entire family in meaningful work isn’t just about giving back—it’s about teaching through action and inspiring the next generation to make a difference.

Both working in child-focused roles, Nick and Katie developed an appreciation for the community’s strengths and a heightened awareness of the areas where support is most needed. Katie began her work with Otter Cove in 2021. She and her business and nonprofit peers realized that it was their turn to step up, build on the foundation laid by others, and lead efforts to make Fergus Falls a community where every child could grow, thrive, and embrace opportunities to continue growing and giving back.

Making Connections and Amplifying Impact

While the Ganoes give to many causes, they consider local and regional giving incredibly important. They recognized West Central Initiative as a trusted partner in advancing the causes they value most, including Nick’s passion for climate and their shared commitment to early childhood education and equity work.

The Ganoes’ connection to West Central Initiative’s work is multi-faceted, starting with a West Central Initiative staff member who served on Katie’s Otter Cove board. Other team members helped connect Katie with designers to shape Otter Cove’s unique look. With a deep professional and personal commitment to early childhood, Katie found alignment with West Central Initiative’s efforts. Today, she represents Otter Tail County as one of West Central Initiative’s Early Childhood Coordinators. Thanks to Katie’s leadership, Otter Cove successfully applied for and received grant funding to support its mission of providing children with a safe and engaging space to learn and explore.

Supporting West Central Initiative’s work has been a good fit for their family, aligning with their personal and family values.

“We know the people doing the work,” Katie Ganoe said. “We see the wide reach and the impact West Central Initiative is making on behalf of everyone in our community.”

The Ganoes are proud when they hear people get excited about the good things happening in the Fergus Falls community. They’re glad to be a part of that groundswell of positivity.

Like many towns in our west central Minnesota region, Fergus Falls offers a sense of community and connectedness that integrates into special moments shared with family and friends.

That’s why the Ganoes support this community and give to West Central Initiative!
