Business & Workforce Development

  • What does it take to ease the workforce shortage in west central Minnesota? Childcare. Housing. Transportation.
Those three needs to workforce recruitment and retention were mentioned over and over again during a series of workforce roundtable discussions in nine counties. Through a grant from West Central Initiative to the Family Economic Success Jobs, Careers & Employability workgroup, staff from Lakes Country Service Cooperative, along with other local agencies, convened and facilitated the discussions.

Community Development

  • By Joyce Hoelting, Peter Caldwell & Mary Ann Hennen
Many residents of rural Minnesota are looking around and asking who will fill leadership roles in their communities. University of Minnesota Extension researchers have found that there are many willing folks. They just need to be asked.

  • In 2014, The West Central Minnesota Family Economic Success (FES) Council contracted with the Center for Small Towns to conduct research that looks at the economic situation facing families in our nine-county region. Researchers compiled data in relation to the FES Council's goals. This report attempts to update the data used in a 2006 report, and to add additional information that may not have been available at the time.

  • Greater Minnesota Rising (GMR) was established to learn more about how emerging leaders are engaging in communities of the West Central and North Central regions of Minnesota. As an initiative of Minnesota Rising, GMR also aimed to further develop a collaborative network of emerging leaders that work towards a shared vision of the state‚Äôs future.
